Do you sometimes struggle with vulnerability?

One of the key themes in Your Leadership Toolkit is the importance of vulnerability in leadership. Vulnerability is something I’ve often grappled with in my journey as a leader. It can be uncomfortable to expose our uncertainties, admit our mistakes, or share our personal stories, especially in a professional setting where we’re often expected to have all the answers. Over time, I’ve come to realize that vulnerability is not a weakness—it’s one of the most powerful tools we have as leaders.

In my book, I share a story about a senior leader and a camel farm. This story is a powerful illustration of how being vulnerable with your team can help to:

➔   Increase team engagement

➔   Foster innovation and collaboration

➔   Build a culture of respect and psychological safety

By sharing your story, your successes and your struggles, you foster an environment of openness and connection. Vulnerability is not about oversharing, instead it is about being genuine, approachable and, most importantly, human.

As Brené Brown wisely said, “Vulnerability is not winning or losing; it’s having the courage to show up and be seen when we have no control over the outcome.”

I’m still learning how to best embrace vulnerability in my own leadership journey – I believe it’s a step worth taking.
